Summary
Praying in Turkish or speaking about spiritual things in Turkish can be rather daunting. To do it well one needs practice and some careful guidance. Some of you may remember the Spiritual Turkish Seminar that was presented in Ankara, Turkey, in 2006 the people who brought you Talkin’ Turkey. It was for all expatriate workers who wanted to grow in their knowledge of spiritual vocabulary and become more comfortable in the language used in church meetings, apologetics and witnessing. The seminar was taught in English, with the relevant parts being in Turkish, of course. This seminar was filmed and is now available in DVD format. While we would encourage you to attend an actual seminar to experience the full value of this course, these DVDs can be used either for your personal enrichment, or — even better — to do your own version of the seminar in a city where it has not been presented.
The instructors in this recording have many years of ministry experience in the country. The actual seminar is very interactive and practical, with lecture, discussion, singing, prayer in small groups, and a “simulated” church meeting and the DVD version does its best to keep the interactivity to a maximum by offering pauses in the sessions for you to practice what has just been presented.
The four-DVD edition of the Spiritual Turkish Seminar includes:
- Nearly seven hours of recorded sessions on basic spiritual terms in Turkish both in video and in mp3 audio
- All handouts and notes used in the seminar
- Instructions on how to conduct your own version of the seminar
Some of the highlights on the DVD are:
- Ken W speaks on the development of the various Turkish translations of the Bible and on spiritual terminology
- A special prayer chart that will help beginners and advanced speakers alike formulate their prayers
- Brian P’s chronological presentation of the gospel
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- discuss and compare the various Scripture translations and be introduced to using the Turkish Bible
- be familiar with the standard hymnody
- pray in a large or small group
- participate in a meeting of believers in Turkish (church or Bible study)
- have the necessary vocabulary for witnessing
- share a personal testimony
- answer standard Muslim objections to Christian beliefs
- lead someone through the steps of salvation
- give appropriate literature on relevant spiritual topics to believing and non-beliving friends
